A group of students from our new Building Services Engineering – Electrotechnical Engineering T Level took their ideas to face a Dragons’ Den style panel.

T Level courses have been designed in collaboration with employers to provide the knowledge, skills, and behaviours necessary to work in the building services industry. A T Level in Building Services Engineering will provide students with broad and deep foundations for careers in areas such as electrical installation and maintenance or plumbing and heating amongst many others! With new specialist equipment and well-equipped facilities, these courses promise a unique option for students.

With a number of core units within the Building Services Engineering – Electrotechnical Engineering T Level giving a wider appreciation of the construction industry, the brief for our students as part of Module 3, “Construction Design Principles” was to design a garden to overhaul and update outdoor space at the Auction Mart.
Split into two teams, the first-year students planned, designed and made prototypes of two very different outdoor spaces, which they presented to our panel consisting of Heads of Departments and members of the Senior Leadership Team.

Within the module, students had the opportunity to create their own company, named Triple C, and manage the project by allocating roles, costing their plans, and managing all aspects of creating and running a construction business from designed letterheads and business cards to considering building regulations and adhering to all necessary health and safety legislation.
Kevin Wilcock, Lecturer in Bricklaying said “It’s important to give our students a taste of all aspects of being part of a company. Students have taken on all roles as part of the process, from design, to creating a prototype, working out costings and a timeline and should all feel confident in the tendering process.”
Gareth Dixon, Vice Principal added “We’re thrilled to be delivering new T Level courses at Craven College and are excited to see how these new qualifications will unlock the potential in our students. Despite being only 6 weeks into their course, today’s students showed commitment and enthusiasm with some really innovative and well-thought-out presentations, and we look forward to seeing their skills and knowledge develop further.”
Our students are really enjoying being the first cohort on our T Levels courses. Group A made up of Louis Charity, Siraj Khabir and Eisa Barket said “The course is practical and efficient, and the electrical aspects are really interesting. It was good to get a feel for how our future careers could go”
Group B; Faheem Ali, Jack Whitaker, Alfie Carney and Harry Gravestock-Harris added “This is a really good, fun course and it is really varied as you learn about all aspects of construction. The second year has a lot of practical elements which is exciting”
We’re now taking applications for a range of exciting T Level courses for September 2025, find out more about the Electrotechnical Engineering T Level and visit us on our Open Events!
