Bricklayer Apprenticeship
Bricklaying is a core function within the construction sector, particularly the house building sector. The Government has a target to build significantly more new homes over the coming years and therefore the demand for bricklayers has never been higher.
As an Apprentice Bricklayer you will lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures eg chimney stacks. You may also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. The range of sites and projects that you will work on include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations. You may work one-on-one or on larger jobs where their bricklaying group (gang) may work on a particular section of a building alongside other bricklaying gangs as well as other trades.
As part of the Apprenticeship, you will have monthly workplace visits from a Learning Development Advisor, with 6 hours per week off the job training which will be tracked. You will build a portfolio showing your work-based evidence.
What you will study
- Health, safety and environmental responsibilities within the construction industry
- Safe working practices, including the use of PPE, risk assessments and hazard awareness
- Sustainable construction methods, recycling and efficient use of materials
- Building regulations, industry standards and quality requirements
- Construction technology, including foundations, walls, floors, roofs, insulation and moisture protection
- The properties and uses of bricklaying materials, including bricks, blocks, mortar, wall ties, damp proof courses (DPCs) and lintels
- Modern methods of construction and emerging building technologies
- Reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications and digital information
- Estimating materials and resources required for bricklaying projects
- The selection, safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools
- Brick bonding patterns, wall construction techniques and decorative brickwork
- Mortar preparation, mixing methods and joint finishes
- Cavity wall construction, openings, insulation and associated building components
- Brick cutting, wall repairs and methods for protecting finished work
- Effective communication, teamwork and professional behaviour within the workplace
- Equality, diversity, inclusion and wellbeing in the construction industry
- Work safely and responsibly in line with construction health, safety and environmental requirements
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE), tools and materials correctly and safely
- Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications and work instructions
- Estimate, select and prepare the materials needed for bricklaying tasks
- Set out and construct brick and block walls accurately, including cavity walls, solid walls, openings and decorative features
- Install associated components such as damp proof courses (DPCs), insulation, wall ties, lintels, cavity trays and fire stopping
- Mix mortar, cut bricks and blocks, and apply a range of joint finishes
- Carry out basic repair and maintenance work to brickwork
- Protect materials and completed work to maintain quality standards
- Communicate effectively with colleagues using industry terminology
- Work effectively as part of a construction team, demonstrating professionalism, equality, diversity and inclusion.
