Interested in working with natural materials? Learn the traditional skills of stone walling in this hands-on beginner course.
This hands-on course is designed for beginners who would like to explore the traditional craft of stonework. Delivered in a practical workshop and outdoor setting, you will learn how to work safely and effectively with natural stone.
Guided by experienced tutors, you will develop essential skills in both dry and wet stone walling techniques. The course allows you to work at your own pace while building confidence and understanding of materials, tools and methods.
By the end of the course, you will be able to demonstrate a range of basic walling techniques and have gained valuable practical experience in this specialist area of construction.
What you’ll cover:
- Basic walling techniques including setting out and using profiles
- Curved and battered walling methods
- Cutting stone and preparing materials
- Mixing and working with mortar
- Bedding stone copings, edgings and flags
- Ground preparation techniques
- Different pointing finishes
- Practical walling activities around the campus
Entry Requirements
No prior experience is necessary – just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn a new skill.

All materials required are included in the course fee.
For your safety and comfort, please bring:
- Sturdy closed-toe footwear
- Appropriate clothing
- Long hair tied back
- No valuable jewellery
- Notepad and Pen
- A drink and snack
