Recruitment of Ex-offenders
Our Commitment to Fair Recruitment
We treat all applicants fairly and do not discriminate unfairly against anyone with a criminal record. This reflects the guidance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), which emphasises fair treatment and equal opportunity in recruitment processes.
All roles within the college involve contact with students, including under‑18s and vulnerable adults. As a result, all roles typically fall within the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order. Applicants will be asked to disclose all convictions, whether spent or unspent (other than where protected cautions and protected convictions do not need to be disclosed, depending on the job concerned). Even in these circumstances, however, the College will not refuse to employ a particular individual unless the nature of the conviction has some relevance to the job for which the individual has applied. After selecting the person for employment, the College will seek documentary evidence about that person’s criminal convictions. The College will seek an Enhanced Disclosure check under the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Where the individual has registered for the DBS update service, the College will, with the employee’s permission, carry out a status check on any current certificate.
