Popular with mature students who want a career change, we offer something a little different to the traditional higher education setting.
Craven College’s rural setting on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and between two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty provides an ideal location for land-based provision and we’re delighted to be able to offer a variety of land-based degrees including Applied Equine Management, Wildlife and Conservation Management and Animal Husbandry and Welfare.

The Conservation Management BSc and Wildlife and Conservation Management FdSc acknowledges the many challenges facing the natural world from climate change and biodiversity loss to the impact of new technologies and invasive species. A career in Conservation can help tackle these issues and this programme develops the professional, technical, and academic skills required to progress to Conservation management roles or further academic study.
Designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of animal management, the Animal Husbandry and Welfare FdSc will equip students with the necessary knowledge to assess the welfare needs of animals, enabling them to acquire practical animal management skills and devise welfare management strategies pertinent to the animal sector. Learning from our state-of-the-art Animal Management Centre will enhance students’ experiences, providing bespoke facilities for a range of species and giving a truly firsthand experience in preparation for industry.

The Applied Equine Management FdSc will give students a comprehensive understanding of equine management, equipping them with the necessary knowledge to assess the welfare needs of horses, providing practical horse management skills and management strategies pertinent to the equine sector. Taught in the Craven Equine Arena, which houses an indoor arena, stabling with full support equipment, show jumps, cross country jumps, and fitness profiling equipment including solarium, the course is a mix of well-integrated practical and theoretical lessons.
Danielle Fox, Head of Land-based Provision said, “Our degree programmes are ideal for mature leaners and for those who want to enhance their career aspirations. We timetable learning over 1.5 days per week so students can earn and care for families whilst they learn.
“Based in the heart of the stunning Yorkshire dales landscape, all our programmes are vocationally focused with hands-on experience in specialist equine and animal facilities. There are also opportunities to gain further professional qualifications alongside their degree.”
