Horse Management (Equine)

You could be on your way to a career in Equine Husbandry, Equine Veterinary Nursing, Yard Management, Riding Instruction, Equine Nutrition or Equine Behaviour with this exciting course based at the Auction Mart Campus in Skipton.

Our New Equine facilities, Craven Arena include an international-sized arena and outdoor warm-up area where events will be scheduled to include Dressage, Show Jumping, Arena Eventing and Showing. Masterclasses, training and clinics will also be delivered by industry professionals. Increased stabling for our College horses and a variety of breeds, with livery opportunities, will ensure that you will enjoy an enriched equine experience with access to purpose-built first-class facilities. The college has access to a wide variety of industrial placements, including stud yards, vets, competition yards, rehabilitation centres, welfare charities, riding schools, livery yards and many more to help the students develop their skills and employability.

You will take part in a combination of theoretical and practical studies to enable you to go straight into employment or you can specialise in Equitation including Teaching, Science and Husbandry or Stud-based units if you want to go onto Degree level study. You will have the opportunity to frequently work on the equine yard and take part in duties such as grooming, feeding, mucking out and tacking up the horses.

Our tutors come with experience in a wide range of disciplines including Dressage, Show Jumping, Equitation, Cross Country, Biomechanical Research, Veterinary Physiotherapy, BHS Standard Setting, producing Competition Horses to Affiliated Level, working with Olympic Eventers, hunters, thoroughbreds and point to pointers. They also compete at events including British Eventing and British Dressage. As a student you will benefit from their wealth of industry links and guest speakers, involvement in The Skipton Horse Trials (including set up) and a visit Bramham Horse Trials.

Entry Requirements

  • Level 3 -5 GCSEs grade 9-4 or equivalent including English, maths & science GCSEs grade 9-4. Riding assessment and related work experience for mature students
  • Level 2 – 4 GCSEs grade 9-3 or equivalent including English & maths GCSEs grade 9-3
  • Level 1 – 3 GCSEs grade 9-1 including English & maths

(Please Note: Due to BHS guidelines from an equine welfare perspective, we stipulate a maximum weight limit of 16 stone for riding. We reserve the right to change this depending on horse availability.)
