Learn how to garden and grow edible crops while gaining a recognised qualification to support your first steps into a career in horticulture.
This course will give you practical knowledge and hands-on skills to build a strong foundation in horticulture. You will gain a clear understanding of what is required to work as a professional gardener, while also developing confidence in maintaining and improving gardens at home or within the community.
You will explore essential horticultural topics, including soil health and improvement, plant identification and care, pest and disease control, sustainable gardening practices and effective garden planning. Learning is practical and outdoors-focused, helping you develop real-world skills that can be applied immediately.
What you’ll cover:
- Understanding different soil types and how to improve soil structure and fertility
- Identifying common weeds and learning safe removal and control techniques
- Recognising seasonal annuals and perennials, including planting, care and harvesting times
- Identifying common pests and diseases and using environmentally responsible control methods
- Planning and maintaining a garden by working with nature to promote healthy growth
- Composting techniques to turn household and garden waste into nutrient-rich compost

This course requires commitment for the full duration of the programme.
You will be expected to complete homework and independent study tasks outside of taught sessions to support your learning and progression. Assessment is ongoing throughout the course and is completed via a portfolio of evidence.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. You will complete an initial assessment to ensure the course is appropriate for your level.
On completion of this course, you may progress to:
City and Guilds Practical Horticulture Skills Level 2
City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma Apprenticeship in Horticulture or Landscaping
Volunteering opportunities within the community
This course provides a strong foundation for further study, employment or community-based gardening projects.

You will need to bring:
- A packed lunch
- Suitable outdoor clothing for all weather conditions, such as a waterproof jacket or hat
- Gardening gloves
- Sturdy footwear
