Students Draw Inspiration from Exciting Trip

Fashion and Textiles and Media Make-up students recently visited the Harrogate Flower Show and Tropical World in Roundhay to gather research and inspiration for their collaborative projects, “The Body is My Canvas” and “In Bloom.”

Year 2 Fashion and Textiles students are working to the brief “The Body is My Canvas.” The project challenges them to explore a wide range of mark-making, painting, printing and embroidery techniques, investigating creative methods for translating surface pattern ideas into wearable art on the body. Students are treating the human form as a dynamic, three-dimensional canvas, pushing the boundaries between fashion, textiles and body art.

Media Make-Up students are exploring the theme “In Bloom,” focusing on flowers, plants and natural forms. Year 1 Media Make-Up students are developing skills in makeup application, body art, airbrushing and mask making. Year 2 Media Make-Up students are investigating the art of headdress construction, experimenting with different materials to create a range of textures and forms. Both year groups used the Harrogate Flower Show and Tropical World as key starting points for research and inspiration.

Olivia Coe, Fashion & Textiles student, said: “The trip was really worthwhile. I explored lots of different flower types and have chosen to study floriography as part of my project research.”

Chloe Mailk, Lecturer in Media Make-Up, added: “This was an exciting trip with an array of beautiful and obscure plants to gain inspiration from.”

The students’ final work will be presented in a fashion show held in our newly refurbished television studio on Thursday 26 November 2026, filmed by Creative Media students. Tickets for the fashion show are free and will be available soon.
