Fashion Show @ The Mill

Published 05 June

Students from Fashion and Textiles, and Media Make-up wowed their audience with a vibrant and exciting catwalk experience showcasing their work from the year.

Hosted in the gorgeous Elsworth Kitchen at the Mill, gathered guests had the privilege to witness the culmination of the students’ hard work and passion as they have worked creatively to bring their visions to life.

Louella Stewart, a Year 2 Fashion and Textiles student said “I loved the experience! The fashion show was a great way to meet lots of different people from different College teams and the local community. The environment was very friendly, and the space was so uplifting!”

The evening was split into four collections. Deconstruct gave an insight into sustainability within the fashion industry, with students using their research into designers who use deconstruction and environmentally friendly methods of production. All the outfits on show were created from unwanted, damaged, and donated items, deconstructed, and upcycled into beautiful new garments.

Costumes, make-up, and headdresses from A Christmas Carol, performed by Performing Arts Students at the Skipton Christmas Market, were next on show. A collaborative effort between departments, students brought a surrealist twist to the dream state of Ebenezer Scrooge in the traditional tale.

The next selection of the night was entitled The Mill and was inspired by students taking a guided tour of High Corn Mill and the surrounding Skipton Woods.

In the fourth and final collection, students showcased their final project of the year, for which students propose their own theme. This theme can be anything they wish and should be something that inspires them to create, communicate and combine all the skills that they have acquired from their chosen pathway. As part of the project students demonstrate their ability to research, explore, problem solve, experiment, and analyse their own developments – preparing themselves for their personal progression routes to university and professional work within the industry.

LauraLee Brennand, Lecturer in Art & Design commented “It was wonderful to see so many guests at the Fashion Show to support our students and to celebrate their amazing achievements with them. The students have poured their hearts and souls into the work they have produced this year, working creatively to bring their visions to life and it was amazing to witness the culmination of their hard work and passion.

I would like to extend a massive thank you to Andrew Mear, owner of High Corn Mill who started our students on their journey by organising a tour, and Rebecca Elsworth from Elsworth Kitchen at The Mill for her support in hosting the event and to all our students, their families and of course our wonderful models!”

Local Designer and Artist Joan Murray, who specialises in knitting and weaving for fashion, attended the Fashion Show and said, “The students presented a varied and lively range of garments. The teamwork was inspiring, and the venue suited the themes perfectly.”

Rebecca Elsworth added “The Fashion Show here at ‘Elsworth at The Mill’ was a hive of activity. It was truly great to experience the varied creative work of the students, as they passionately showcased their talents. The atmosphere was buzzing with expression and creativity, and it was a pleasure to host this Fashion Show for the students.”
