British Heart Week, founded by the British Heart Foundation, runs from 07 to 15 June and aims to raise awareness about heart disease and help people to access the right treatment whilst acknowledging the medical professionals who continue to undertake life-saving research. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the UK, responsible for 1 in every 4 deaths.

British heart week is the perfect time to remember how quick thinking and a recently undertaken first-aid course at Tyro Training helped save the life of a man who collapsed in cardiac arrest in Skipton in January 2022.

Adam Wilcock was driving home when he noticed Brian Bower slumped against a wall looking unwell. Adam said “I just noticed him standing there looking unwell when he suddenly slumped to the ground. I abandoned my car and ran over. He was an awful colour and looked lifeless”.

Adam began CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) straight away. In a stroke of fortune, Adam had undertaken a first aid course at Tyro Training, the commercial division of Craven College the previous October and was able to put his skills into practice.

Adam said “I’m a lead instructor with Land Rover Experience at Broughton Hall. We often go out alone with a customer, so everyone has to be first aid trained. I last went on a course in October so I was confident I could help.”

Brian, a retired electrician and security fitter, was rushed to Airedale Hospital where he had two more heart attacks; one in intensive care. Apart from suffering broken ribs from three lots of resuscitation, Brian recovered well.

The Royal Humane Society awarded Adam with The Resuscitation Certificate of the Society for his quick thinking and efforts in saving Brian’s life.

Brian’s daughter Kathryn took to social media to thank Adam and Tyro Training for the part they played in saving her father’s life, and as a result Tyro Training offered Kathryn a free one-day course in CPR which she participated in with her partner, his brother and three other family members, giving them the confidence to know how to act should the situation arise.

Our First Aid programmes are approved by the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB) to deliver a professional and consultative training experience. The sessions are designed to develop ability and most importantly practical skill, to help participants to manage a casualty situation with confidence.

Alex Aspden, Employment Engagement Manager at Tyro Training said, “When we heard the story about Adam Wilcock saving Brian’s life by performing CPR at the roadside, it gave us immense pride and confidence that the learners learn First Aid at Tyro Training are out in the community in the surrounding towns and villages, ready to help those who need it”.
