Fashion Students Take to the Catwalk

Published 10 June

Our exciting annual Fashion Show celebrates the incredible achievements of our Creative Industries students!

On the catwalk, students showcased work from Art, Design and Communication Level 3 Year 1, Fashion and Textiles Level 3 Year 2, Foundation Diploma in Art and Design Level 3 and Media Make Up Level 3 Years 1 and 2.

The students have poured their hearts and souls into the work they have produced this year working creatively to bring their visions to life. The audience had the privilege of witnessing the culmination of this hard work and passion.

The show was split into four themed areas: –

  • Deconstruct: In this project Year 1 Art, Design and Communication students took unwanted or old clothes, deconstructed them, experimented with draping on the mannequin and then reconstructed the clothes into new ideas for fashion, changing both the form and function of the original items. For many students this was the first time they had experimented with garment construction techniques and using sewing machines.

Within Fashion and Textile classes students looked at the environmental impact of the fashion industry and ways in which we can make fashion more sustainable.
  • Love and War: Year 2 Fashion and Textile students considered the impact of war on fashion, within cultural movements, and the use of textiles in wartime efforts. Additionally, students investigated how expressions of love have been reflected in art, fashion, and textiles through Roman and Greek mythology, mini portraiture, wedding attire, and love messages from letters, poetry, and social dating sites.

Research trips to The Royal Armouries in Leeds, Leeds Discovery Centre, and The Peace Museum in Saltaire gave students a rich vein of topics and concepts relating to the themes of love and war.
  • Metamorphosis: A collaborative project with Level 3 Year 2 Fashion and Textile students, Level 3 Media Make-up students and HNC Performing Arts students and Media Make-up students, featuring costumes and masks designed for a captivating performance showcasing how the human body could create and express concepts of metamorphosis and change.

The Performing Arts students chose the concept of the developing world and the impact technology has on the Earth. Through research, the aim was to revolutionise the audience experience through the power of interactive and metamorphosing costumes.
  • Final Major Project: For their final project, our students propose their own themes and express their unique styles and techniques learned throughout the year. Students demonstrated their ability to research, explore, problem solve, experiment and analyse their own designs, communicating and combining all the skills they have acquired on their chosen pathway.

LauraLee Brennand, Lecturer in Art & Design said: “What a wonderful way to end the year! Witnessing the students’ creativity come down the runway fills me with pride. Participating in the College fashion show offers the students so many valuable experiences from collaboration and teamwork, to event management skills, creative expression and identity, and public exposure and feedback. It is so rewarding seeing work from the entire academic year presented together – it provides a story of all our hard work, all our creativity and all our successes!
