Catering Department has Busy End to Half Term!

Published 19 February

Catering students have had a really busy end to their half term with a range of guests, visits and experiences to complement their classroom learning.

Gallo Rice Visit

Students enjoyed a visit from Jason Morrison from Gallo Rice who gave an insightful presentation into the world of Gallo and encouraged our students to enter the National Risotto Competition – even the tutors learned a thing or two!

We then took students away from campus to the Hilton and Queens Hotels in Leeds, where we were given a fascinating behind the scenes tour and insight into running a hotel.

Back on campus we were delighted to welcome Rob Newton, Regional Officer from the British Association for Shooting and Conversation (BASC) who gave a fascinating talk on the types of game available in the UK, including some tips on how best to prepare game and provided us with some pheasants for the students to use to make some great dishes from curries to pan-friend pheasant breast. Rob’s knowledge is invaluable and gave our students a real insight into the world of game.

Rob was very complimentary on the standard of food created saying “there isn’t one plate of food I wouldn’t have finished off!

Finally, we were delighted to welcome the judges from the International Wine and Food Society to Craven College to judge the College final of the Young Chef competition. Only two students should have been picked to go through to the final in Leeds, however the standard on the day was so fierce, three students went through. Huge congratulations to Level 1 Professional Chef student Oliver Wood, Level 2 Culinary Skills student Alfie Martin and Level 2 Commis Chef Apprentice Evan Picken for their amazing skills. The final is in Leeds on 24 April, and the winner will be announced on 20 May at a prize-giving lunch and we’re really excited to hear how our students get on!
