Health and Social Care Students Experience Emergency Morning
Health & Social Care Students enjoyed a morning focused on peer learning, by participating in a series of interactive, hands-on activities designed to build their skills in emergency response and care.
With activities ranging from drone-assisted emergency response simulation to mannequin resuscitation and trauma response, microbiological hazards in emergency situations to forensic scene investigation, risk assessment and emergency planning to social investigation in emergency situations to crisis management simulation students were tested and stretched in a wide variety of real-life scenarios.
These activities not only provide practical emergency response experience but also deepen students’ understanding of how different disciplines integrate in health and social care contexts.
Lucy Woodhead, Lecturer in Health & Social Care, Caring Professions said “Such a fantastic morning watching our students in action! Our Emergency Simulation Morning brought together Level 2 and Level 3 Year 2 Health & Social Care students, working in mixed groups and peer-teaching one another through hands-on activities. From drone search and rescue to disease outbreak testing and forensic fingerprinting, it was inspiring to see them sharing knowledge and learning new skills from one another. A huge shout-out to everyone for their teamwork, enthusiasm, and professionalism. These students are ready for anything!”
Student feedback from the event was resoundingly positive, with comments including;
“I got to try things I never thought I’d be doing – like fingerprinting and handling a simulated angry patient. It made me feel more confident in what I’m learning and my future in health and social care. Can’t wait for the next one!”
“Jolly good, really interactive!”
“It was really different, very good. First aid was my favourite, I learned a lot more from this session than I did in a First Aid course I did elsewhere”.
“It was really interesting and great to do practical elements. The drone was the most fun!”
Stephanie McKay, Head of Department for Caring Professions said “What a great response to our Health and Social Care Emergency Simulation activity morning. A special thanks to Lucy Woodhead, Alex Aspen and all the tutors for organising this and making it such a success. Students across all Health & Social Care levels worked in teams participating in emergency scenarios and demonstrated excellent professional knowledge, skills and behaviours solving sector relevant problems. Some of their highlights were Drone Search and Rescue, Forensic Crime Scene evidence gathering, on the scene lifesaving simulations and infection transmission microbiology investigations. We are already looking forward to our next skills event, the return of “The Anatomy Lab” for Science and Health & Social Care on December the 2nd.”
Our Health & Social Care courses are now taking applications for September 2025.
