A range of local specialists attended Craven Equine Arena over the last few weeks to deliver a series of demonstrations and lectures surrounding large animal rescue and safety.
With sessions open to the public, and students and staff from Craven College, members of the equine team from Aireworth Vets, trailer specialist Jack Whitaker and Redwatch Cleckheaton the specialist team from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue brought their unique expertise to arm the audience with a range of techniques to deal with emergency situations. The only teams of this nature in the area have access to equipment uniquely designed for purpose and to work towards the best possible outcomes.
The first session saw Jack Whitaker sharing his expertise on all aspects of trailer safety from best practice to set up, from preparation to transport your horse safely to hitching to a vehicle.
Members of Redwatch Cleckheaton then demonstrated techniques for moving a trapped horse, or a horse in distress to safety, ably assisted by fake horse Brian. Brian, weighing in at around 200 lbs, is designed to move as a horse would, and yet again did a sterling job of working with the experts to deliver fascinating training.
Daniel Inman of Redwatch said, “We’re here to raise awareness and to give the equine community an insight into our capability and the techniques we have. We are available for both emergency and non-emergency situations and can bring our knowledge and experience to assist.”
The audience was then treated to a guide to equine first aid from the team at Aireworth Vets including setting up a first aid kit for the yard, dressing a leg wound and dealing with abscess care.
Abi Daggett, Aireworth Vets said “The purpose of today is to educate clients and the wider public whilst offering Compulsory Personal Development to vets and equine students. We intend to give a real in-depth view of equine safety, including how to deal with traumatic and difficult situations that might arise”.
Amelia Fawcett, Equine Technician and coordinator of events at Craven Arena added “It was great to be able to host the best people in their fields in our Arena”.
With 04 November seeing the 2nd birthday of Craven Equine Arena, it was fitting that the space hosted an event centred around helping us take the best possible care of our horses and give unique insights into safety and care.
