Throughout your studies, you will develop the practical skills, specialist knowledge and academic confidence needed to progress to university, higher-level study, apprenticeships or employment within the health and social care sector.

A key part of your learning will be gaining experience in a real working environment. You will complete a mandatory placement alongside your college studies, allowing you to apply your knowledge and skills within a professional care or healthcare setting. To undertake placement, you will be required to complete a DBS check, ensuring you are able to work safely with children, young people and vulnerable adults.

Combining classroom-based learning with hands-on practical experience, our courses provide an engaging and immersive introduction to the caring professions. You will explore a range of subjects, including psychology, sociology, human anatomy and physiology, helping you develop a deeper understanding of health, human development and behaviour across the lifespan.

You will also benefit from access to the latest educational technology, including Virtual Reality (VR) simulations. These immersive learning experiences allow you to practise responding to realistic healthcare scenarios, develop your communication skills and build confidence in a safe and supportive environment before entering the workplace.

At the heart of the department is our purpose-built Healthcare Suite, a state-of-the-art learning environment designed to replicate professional healthcare settings. Here, you will develop essential practical and clinical skills, supported by tutors with extensive experience across a range of health and social care professions.

Your learning extends beyond the classroom through a variety of trips, visits and enrichment activities. Opportunities to visit healthcare providers and participate in community volunteering projects will enable you to gain valuable insight into the sector while making a positive contribution to others.
