Craven College apprentice Louie Elsey celebrated being one of the finalists for Student/Apprentice of the Year 2022 at the annual Yorkshire Post Country Week Rural Awards last night which was held at The Pavilions of Harrogate.

Louie started his Level 2 Stockperson apprenticeship in September 2019 and although he’s not from a farming background, he was adamant that Agriculture was the industry he wanted to work in. Louie started work on a dairy farm, as well as working part-time hours on a sheep farm. He discovered he preferred the variation of working with sheep so decided to move his placement to the sheep farm.

Kate Fryer, Louie’s Apprenticeship Coordinator said, “Louie has always been a reliable apprentice. He has a great work ethic, excellent time keeping and showed a real commitment to learning as much as he could on his placement. Louie’s employer speaks very highly of him commenting on his progression and how quickly Louie picks up new tasks.

Louie has been an absolute pleasure to teach, his attendance was excellent, always very polite, respectful and has a great sense of humour. He contributed well to class discussions and was always very enthusiastic to talk about his placement but to also learn about other students’ experiences.

Louie produced an excellent portfolio over the course of his apprenticeship and has achieved an overall distinction, which he absolutely deserved. We couldn’t be prouder!”
