A Dementia Friend is somebody that learns more about dementia, how it can affect someone and the small ways they can make a difference in their communities. Many people living with dementia often feel isolated and left out because dementia is still so misunderstood. This lack of understanding can make it harder for people with the condition to stay independent and feel connected to their communities. Dementia Friends help to change that by using their awareness to do simple, everyday things that matter—helping people with dementia live their lives to the fullest.

Dementia Advocates and Ambassadors Helen and Lesley attended College to deliver a Dementia Awareness session to our students. The students were highly engaged with the session and were able to learn plenty of information to directly support their coursework and future practice.

Chelsea Wallace, Lecturer in Health and Social Care said “At Craven College, our Health and Social Care students are preparing for the future. With an aging population, understanding dementia is more important than ever.

This session is all about ensuring our learners can support those living with dementia in a way that is empathic, empowered and informed. Whether they’re heading into professional healthcare roles or supporting individuals in their local community, we believe that everyone should have the confidence to support people living with dementia in a compassionate way.”
