Students Enjoy Range of Airport Visits

Published 26 March

Students across various courses and levels have continued to enjoy our close relationship with Leeds Bradford Airport with a range of visits to enhance their classroom learning.

Level 4 Aviation and Operations Management students are working on a module on Airport Operations. A recent visit to Leeds Bradford Airport allowed them to experience first-hand how global and national procedures and policies are embedded into the everyday running of our local airport. This all provides a practical back drop to their current studies where they are investigating the policies and procedures, laws and regulations relating to global, legal, and ethical issues within an aviation context.

Students enjoyed a guided tour kindly organised by Connor Ivison, Airport Duty Manager and former Craven College student taking in landside operational services, commercial revenue streams, and airside operations such as aircraft turnarounds and ramp activities.

Students took the passenger journey through the landside check-in areas of Jet2 and check-in Hall B looking at both manual desks and automated check-in kiosks, then continued on through security noting the procedures in place.

Once airside, they got to view the new terminal extension and operation centre, then returning landside visited the new baggage collection and immigration areas.

Victoria Carolan, Lecturer in Aviation and Travel said, “This visit was an invaluable insight into the passenger journey and a behind the scenes visit to enhance understanding and studies.”

Learners were able to talk to pilots, cabin crew, police, and Border Force before trying out the terminal PA system. The visit ended with some time spent in the new Control Centre finding out more about airport operations and watching the unloading and loading of aircraft.

Sarah Burgess, Lecturer in Travel, Tourism and Aviation said, “Our students enjoyed an amazing and inspirational day at Leeds Bradford Airport, thoroughly enjoyed by all.”
