London Trip Complements Classroom Learning

Published 20 March

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion and Textiles (Year 2) students recently went on a trip to London to gather research for their final major project. Students had the opportunity to visit the Victoria & Albert Museum to view the permanent display as well as securing tickets to the viral and sold-out Marie Antoinette exhibition. Students also managed to squeeze in visits to the Natural History Museum and The Design Museum.

In their final major project students have the opportunity to write a brief based on personal interests and sources of inspiration. They have freedom to develop their creative work how they want. On the trip each student gathered personal research related to their own project themes.

Aliza Dobson, Level 3 Art & Design student said, “The London trip was great, it was really relevant to my project which is on Marie Antoinette, so it was amazing to see the exhibition. The trip was really important because it gave us chance to do lots of primary research which can be really hard to get.

LauraLee Brennand, Lecturer in Art & Design said “The recent field trip to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London was truly amazing. It was such a wonderfully busy and fun day, packed with incredible sights and inspiration. The absolute highlight for me was the stunning garments on display in the Marie Antoinette Style exhibition – the intricate details and craftsmanship were simply breathtaking.

I love the opportunity to take my students on trips like this, to help them see the world firsthand, experience real historical and artistic treasures, and find fresh inspiration for our art and fashion projects. This trip did not disappoint at all.

I can’t wait to see how the students draw on their research from the day to develop ideas for their final pieces, which we’ll proudly exhibit in our end-of-year fashion show this June.

Work from the project will be displayed on campus in the Fashion Show on 2 June and the End of Year Show exhibition on 11 June.
