Based in the dedicated Multimedia Suite using modern and professional-level equipment, teams of students have the opportunity to run their own radio shows. Currently running a morning and lunch edition, this is soon expanding to include a late morning and late afternoon edition, giving even more students throughout our campus the chance to listen in to the shows!

Taking responsibility for every aspect of a radio show, students man the audio console, choose the music content, pick their own topics for the show, and even act in the role of presenter.

Cooper Mitchell, Level 3 Creative Media student said “This started as work experience for me, and I just stayed on because I really enjoyed it. We present what is really a variety show and we record episodes twice a week.

It’s really good fun, even when you have to be careful with the content of what you put out in terms of music you can really ensure you have a good range in your show.”

Harrison Hidden-Coley, also Level 3 Creative Media added, “I really enjoy doing the radio shows. Choosing the content is a really good mix of spontaneous and then sometimes a topic that ties into what’s going on in the world. We have done episodes on songs from films and games, and recently we did a show devoted to space to coincide with the launch of Artemis II.

Students from Creative Media, Performing Arts, Uniformed Public Services and Higher Education have all been involved recording and presenting informative shows on the radio station, with even tutors getting involved. Recently Dr James Simpkin, Lecturer in Public Services shared a fantastic podcast about the experience of visiting Auschwitz.

As the station expands, the long-term plan is to get more departments involved to share what is happening in their areas.

Ben Pearson, Lecturer in Creative Media added, “Craven College Radio has been an exciting and long-awaited challenge, that has set out to provide students with relevant technical skills to ready them for the industry. It is also a great way for students to become confident with speaking and presenting themselves to an audience.

It has been excellent to hear positive feedback from across College of how students and staff are enjoying the music, conversations and podcasts that play on the radio. We are now entering the next phase of the Radio with a new set of presenters taking off and more ambition with the different shows that we will have playing.”
