Thinking about progressing your career as a teaching assistant?
This course aims to develop your skills and knowledge to enable you to work in an unsupervised role that supports pupils’ learning in a school environment.
You will be studying the following subjects, along with developing transferable skills, such as teamwork, communication and self-assessment skills, which will benefit you as you progress through your career.

- Support health and safety in a learning environment
- Understand how to safeguard children and young people
- Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
- Understand how children and young people develop
- Support positive behaviour in children and young people
- Support children and young people during learning activities
- Support English and maths skills
- Support the use of ICT in the learning environment
- Support assessment for learning
- Engage in personal and professional development
In addition to Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, you will also work towards some sector related short level 2 course e.g. Behaviour that Challenges, Mental Health First Aid and Safeguarding & Prevent.
It is expected that students will complete homework outside of the classroom.
Entry Requirements
- Commitment to the full duration of the course is required.
- Part of your assessment requires you to be observed, so you must have a placement (either as a volunteer or as a member of staff, for at least one day per week) in a school environment.
- You should have completed a level 2 teaching assistant qualification however you will have an initial assessment to ensure that you are on the correct course.
- You should also have a maths and English qualification at Level 2 or be planning to achieve these soon.
