Thinking about working as a teaching assistant but need the qualifications?

This course aims to develop your skills and knowledge to enable you to work in a supervised role that supports pupils’ learning in a school environment.

During this course you will gain two qualifications:

  • Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools and Colleges
  • Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools

You will be studying the following subjects, along with developing transferable skills, such as teamwork, communication and self-assessment skills, which will benefit you as you progress through your career.

  • Child and young person development
  • Support learning activities
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Help improve own and team practice in schools
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Support children and young people’s health and safety
  • Support children and young people’s positive behaviour

It is expected that students will complete homework outside of the classroom.

Entry Requirements

  • Commitment to the full duration of the course is required.
  • Part of your assessment requires you to be observed, so you must have a placement (either as a volunteer or as a member of staff, for at least one day per week) in a school environment.
  • It is preferred that you have some experience of working with children or have completed a level 1 qualification, however this isn’t essential as you will have an initial assessment to ensure that you are on the correct course.
  • You should also have a maths and English qualification at Level 2 or be planning to achieve these.

Further Study

  • NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
