Over the past few weeks, Public Services students have hosted a number of exciting visitors into College, to share a range of expertise and experiences.

Martin and colleagues led a fun and engaging session with students. They talked about their roles and the routes to entry, how they deal with stressful and sad call outs, but also the fulfilment they get from helping people. They then got students involved with CPR training on a manikin and gave them a tour around an ambulance.

James and Peter, Border Force Officers, spoke about entry routes into becoming a Border Force Officer and what life was like on the job. They told funny stories of strange items people have tried to bring through customs – such as a whole cooked goat in a suitcase! They brought in UV lights and magnifying glasses so students could see the hidden holographic images and tiny writing embedded in passports that makes them harder to forge.

Carole, Security Training Manager at Leeds Bradford Airport, spoke to students about the kind of security issues facing airport security staff and the different employment roles available. Carole then did a quiz with the students about what items can and can’t be brought through security.

Dr James Simpkin, Lecturer in Public Services said, “we’re always delighted to welcome visitors to campus especially when they help our Public Service students learn about life in the job.”
