Level 3 Media Make-up students are finishing their most recent module, by recreating a range of wartime looks. With four characters to choose from, pre-war male, wartime male, post-war male, and wartime female, students were able to really immerse themselves in the creative process to create their authentic period looks as part of their brief.
As part of their research into the period, students have visited a number of local museums (read more about the trip here) to ensure their work is authentic and accurate.
Level 3, Year 2 Media Make-up student Bethany Drake was making up her model Jay into a male character both post and during the war, and then model Phoebe into a female character showing the less talked about impacts to women during the war.
Bethany said “The prosthetics for the project have been pre-made. They’re created from clay then moulded from silicone.”
Bethany has a long history with Craven College, first starting as a Media student, then taking the Media Make-up course. She added “The good thing about Craven College is that I could resit my maths GCSE alongside my course, which my other options didn’t allow.”
Bethany plans to use the skills from her course in a really specific way, as a Mortuary Cosmetologist helping people say goodbye to their loved ones in the way they remembered them from life.
Hannah Shackleton, Photography Lecturer said, “The students have had the chance to use prosthetics to create periodically accurate wounds to attach to their models. The historical accuracy of the students’ work is really important and sets them up well should they go onto careers within the industry. We also try and employ experimental and open techniques in addition, to give our students a truly well-rounded experience.”
Applications are currently being taken for Media Make-up for September 2025.
