Try the pottery wheel for the first time and create your own ceramic piece in this hands-on taster session
This introductory taster session is perfect for beginners who would like to experience throwing on the pottery wheel in a supportive and practical environment.
Across the session, you will be guided through the basics of wheel throwing, learning how to prepare and shape clay into simple forms. With step-by-step support from experienced tutors, you will gain confidence using the pottery wheel while exploring your creativity.
By the end of the session, you will select your best piece to be professionally fired, leaving you with a finished ceramic item to collect at a later date.
What you’ll cover
- Introduction to the pottery wheel and safe working practices
- Setting up and using the wheel
- Preparing and selecting clay
- Basic throwing techniques such as centring and shaping
- Creating simple ceramic forms
- Selecting and preparing your work for firing
Entry Requirements
No prior experience is necessary – just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn a new skill.
Information
All materials required are included in the course fee.
For your safety and comfort, please bring:
- Closed-toe footwear
- Long hair tied back
- No valuable jewellery
- Optional: your own apron (aprons are also available to borrow)
- A drink and snack (there will be a short break)
