Craven College and master leatherworker Andy Bates (as seen on BBC’s ‘Make it at Market’) have come together to offer a new introductory leatherwork course in Ripon.
You will gain experience in the fundamental skills of traditional leatherwork which include the identification of tools and leathers, marking- and cutting out, dyeing, attachment of fittings, hand-stitching, burnishing and polishing and others.
Throughout the course you will also gain knowledge of the history of working with leather, the ethics of its use and design concepts and skills.
You will be guided towards the creation of a final piece which will be displayed in an exhibition in Ripon (dates and venue to be confirmed).
- Session #1 – Illustrated talk and familiarisation with tools, materials and leathergoods
- Session #2 – Marking out, cutting
- Session #3 – Dyeing, attachment of fittings
- Session #4 – Glueing, hand stitching
- Session #5 – Edge finishing, burnishing, polishing
Entry Requirements
No prior experience of working with leather is required and the number of participants on a course will be limited.
Information
Andy Bates has worked with leather for around forty years. He has made pieces for TV, Theatre, film and opera and for private collectors such as Grayson Perry. He also makes archaeological facsimiles for museum and universities.
Andy has taught the skills of leatherwork to everyone from children to professionals and works as a craft mentor for the award winning BBC series ‘Make it at Market’. He also writes and lectures on all aspects of the subject.
Andy is Heritage Crafts Association coordinator for the North of England and is currently working on projects with the Worshipful Company of Saddlers and the Walsall Leather Skills Centre.
