Learn how to plan, film and produce your own visual content in this practical introduction to filmmaking.
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of filmmaking, covering the full process from initial idea through to creating a finished visual product. Suitable for beginners, it offers a balance of practical workshops and classroom-based learning in a supportive environment.
Over 12 weeks, you will explore the key stages of production, including planning, filming and basic production techniques. You will gain hands-on experience using camera equipment and develop an understanding of how visual and sound elements come together to create effective film content.
By the end of the course, you should have completed filming for a visual product, and developed the confidence to continue exploring filmmaking techniques. What you’ll cover:
- Introduction to filmmaking and production processes
- Pre-production planning and idea development
- Understanding digital cameras and manual settings
- Using camera accessories such as tripods, lighting and stabilisation equipment
- Recording and managing sound both on location and in a studio
- Basic lighting setups for film
- Filming techniques and shot composition
- Developing and producing a short visual project
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. This is an introductory level course suitable for beginners.
Information
You are advised to bring:
- A digital camera if you have one
- Sound recording equipment (optional)
- SD cards and card readers
- A notebook for ideas and planning
Some equipment may be available, but bringing your own will help you develop familiarity with your kit.
