Good English skills are essential for work and further study. Build confidence and work towards achieving a Grade 4 in GCSE English Language.
This GCSE English Language course is designed to help you develop the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills needed for employment, further education or higher education. The course runs from September to June, with classes taking place for two hours each week.
You will study a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, exploring how writers use language to create meaning and impact. You will develop skills in analysing texts, comparing writing from different time periods, and producing your own creative and non-fiction writing.
Throughout the course, you will also improve your spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as building confidence in speaking and listening through group discussions, debates and presentations. Mock assessments will take place throughout the year to support exam preparation and prepare for the two final exams, which take place in early June.
What you’ll cover:
- Reading and analysing fiction and non-fiction texts
- Comparing texts from different eras
- Creative writing techniques
- Writing non-fiction texts for different purposes and audiences
- Improving spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Speaking and listening skills, including discussion and presentations
- Exam preparation and assessment practice
You will be expected to:
- Attend all sessions and aim for 100% attendance
- Commit to at least one hour of independent study outside of class each week
- Be punctual and prepared for learning
Entry Requirements
You will need to demonstrate that you are working at a Grade 3 (previously Grade D) standard at the start of the year. This will be assessed at the beginning of the course.

Further Study
Achieving a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language is a requirement for many jobs and further or higher education courses.
This qualification can support progression into employment, apprenticeships, college courses or university study.
