Strong English skills open doors. Build confidence, improve communication and boost your employability with a Functional Skills English qualification.

This course is designed to support you in developing practical English skills that can be used in everyday life, work and further study. Whatever your previous experience of English, you will receive tailored support to help improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

You will work towards achieving a nationally recognised Functional Skills English qualification at either Level 1 or Level 2. Learning focuses on building confidence and applying English skills in real-life situations.

To achieve the qualification, you will complete assessments in Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. Mock assessments will be completed before you are entered for the final exams, which are offered at different points throughout the year. You can resit exams up to three times within an academic year if needed.

What you’ll cover:

  • Developing reading skills for everyday and workplace texts
  • Writing clearly and effectively for different purposes
  • Speaking and listening skills for discussions and presentations
  • Applying English skills to real-life situations
  • Preparing for Functional Skills assessments

You will be expected to complete homework outside of the classroom to support your learning, and commitment to attending sessions for the full duration of the course is required.
