Before you make a commitment to a more intensive course, come and explore key areas: counselling skills, the core conditions, theory and personal discovery.
‘Listening to clients is one of the most vital aspects of therapy … hearing the words is not enough – empathic listening involves listening to the feeling and emotions behind the words, and everything that comes with them.’ (Knox and Cooper, 2015: 42)
Over the four weeks you will be able to journey through some of the basic skills needed for students wishing to progress to the Level 2 Certificate or Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills. We will consider where the theoretical concepts originated, the practice and use of the core conditions and counselling skills and self-development that runs through all counselling skills and counselling training.
- Explore the basics of deep listening – the core conditions.
- Get a flavour of the origins of Counselling from Freud to Beck
- Participate in creative activities to explore yourself
- Learn what is Involved in undertaking Counselling skills course at Leve 2 and 3
- How to progress from the Level 3 Diploma into Counselling training
This is an introductory class that is designed to allow you briefly explore the counselling skills classes that have been offered at Craven College and within the community for several years.This course does not qualify you to use counselling skills or provide therapeutic counselling for others.
Information
You will need access to the Internet, Microsoft Teams, a working microphone and camera on your computer, laptop, tablet etc. You will need to be confident in the use of these. You will also need a pen and paper.

From the Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills, most of our students then move onto their counselling training at either a university or Further Education College that provides Higher Education Courses. To gain entry you need to have the Level 3 Diploma and either an O Level Grade C, GCSE 4 or above in English and Mathematics, or a Level 2 Functional Skills equivalent in English and Mathematics.
