Would you like to support your community by helping individuals access essential public services?
The role of the community interpreter is increasingly important, particularly in areas with diverse linguistic communities. On this course, you will be introduced to community interpreting and supported to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to support others in both voluntary and employed roles.
You will learn about the responsibilities of a community interpreter, improve your English language skills for interpreting contexts, and develop effective communication, listening and assertiveness skills. You will also gain an understanding of how public services operate within the UK and the professional standards expected when working as a community interpreter.
During the programme, you will work towards the following qualifications:
- Level 1 Award in Understanding Community Interpreting
- Level 2 Certificate in Preparing for the Community Interpreting Role

- Communication and active listening skills
- Developing confidence and assertiveness
- English language skills for interpreting contexts
- Understanding how UK public services operate
- Professional conduct and ethical practice
You are expected to attend all classes for the full duration of the course. You should also be prepared to complete homework tasks and independent study outside of the classroom.
Entry Requirements
You will be required to attend an interview and complete an initial assessment as part of the enrolment process.

No specialist equipment is required, just a willingness to take part and practice.

On successful completion of this course, you may progress onto:
- Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting
This qualification can support progression into voluntary or paid community interpreting roles across a range of public and community services
