Progression to Learning & Work students Step into the Ring with Craven Community Boxing Club

Learners from the Progression to Learning and Work (PLW) programme recently took part in an inspiring boxing session hosted by Craven Community Boxing Club, giving them the chance to build confidence, fitness, and teamwork in a supportive community setting.

The session introduced learners to the fundamentals of boxing training, including warm-ups, pad work, and basic techniques, all delivered in an inclusive and encouraging environment. For many, it was a chance to try something completely new, challenge themselves, and experience the benefits of physical activity in a positive, structured way.

Staff from the PLW team praised the session for helping learners develop resilience, communication skills and self-belief – key skills that support their wider learning and progression into work or further education.

One learner said: “I was nervous at first, but everyone made me feel welcome. I really enjoyed it and felt proud of myself for giving it a go.”

The visit is part of the PLW programme’s ongoing commitment to providing enriching, real-world experiences that support learners’ personal development, confidence, and readiness for the next steps in their journey.

New Wellbeing Programme Launched Through Partnership with SELFA

Through our ongoing partnership with SELFA, we are pleased to be delivering a 12-week programme of wellbeing sessions for selected students within PLW and Foundation Learning.

The sessions will be delivered by Missing Peace Wellbeing + Support, a community organisation passionate about peer support and emotional wellbeing. Missing Peace specialises in providing structured, activity-based support groups within local communities and beyond, creating safe spaces where individuals can feel supported, understood, and empowered.

Sessions will take place in a relaxed, non-judgemental, and friendly environment, designed to help students build confidence, develop coping strategies, and strengthen their wellbeing. Missing Peace takes an open and honest approach, recognising that everyone is unique and that everyone deserves the right to feel content and supported.

Using their own lived experience, the team at Missing Peace is able to empathise deeply with participants and demonstrate that recovery and positive change are possible. This approach aligns closely with our commitment to inclusive support, student wellbeing, and positive learner outcomes.

This programme represents an important step in enhancing wellbeing support for our learners and strengthening collaborative working with trusted community partners.

Jemma Crozier, Head of Department said, “Sessions like boxing and the wellbeing work delivered through SELFA give young people a healthy outlet, helping them build confidence, manage stress, and feel more connected. They provide a safe space where students can focus on both their physical and mental wellbeing.”
