Trip Cements Classroom Learning

Published 17 August

Adult learners from the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning course accompanied their tutor on an informative and interesting trip to Bolton Abbey. The trip was designed to help students practice the skills needed to do risk assessments when taking groups of children on school trips.

Supporting Teaching and Learning is a nationally recognised qualification preparing students to work confidently in schools and colleges. Designed for those who currently work in schools, or want to change their career into education, the course gives the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to support students and staff across a range of educational settings.

Some of our adult learners gave their thoughts on the trip: –

On the trip I learned how to keep myself safe while learning about health and safety. The trip helped me become more independent, responsible, and confident” ~ Samina

On the trip I learned how to support children in an outdoor environment and keep all the children together in a group. I navigated the map and learned the importance of risk assessments. It was a really good day!” ~ Sarah

On the trip to Bolton Abbey we learned many things. The trip was really enjoyable and Nila planned it well.” ~ Carla

The trip to Bolton Abbey was amazing! I got to learn how to stay safe myself and learned about slip and fall hazards when taking children out on a trip. The trip was well organised by Nila

Of course, no trip to Bolton Abbey is complete without a picnic by the river and an ice cream!

Mel Cairns, Head of Adult Education said, “This practical experience is essential in preparing our student Teaching Assistants to contribute to safe and inclusive learning environments by providing a valuable opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to a real setting by observing, identifying and assessing real-life risks. Trips like this strengthen their understanding of risk assessment procedures, promote safety awareness, and develop the confidence required to support pupils effectively in a range of educational settings.
