A Day on the Farm!
Last week a group of Access to FE, Animal, Equine, and Land-based students visited the wonderful Harwes Farm in Colne for a day of outdoor experiences, to take part in their community allotment initiative.

Harwes Farm was established with the aim of creating a space that fosters community, learning, and personal growth, whilst they explore innovative ways to engage with local communities and ensure a sustainable future for everyone involved.
The students arrived bright and early, just as the mist was lifting off the fields, with the morning sun promising the perfect day to be spent outdoors! The first job our students undertook was planting trees. Tasked with planting a number of new saplings into one of the fields, our team enjoyed giving the trees a chance to take root and grow.
The next task was planting potatoes and onions. The earth was soft from recent rain, which is perfect for planting. Working in rows our students enjoyed the slow and steady work, pressing seed potatoes into the soil and dropping onion seeds just below the surface.
The final job of the day saw our students spending time with the resident sheep, where they had the chance to feed them with hay and pellets, despite the badly behaved sheep trying to eat coats and attempting to steal the food bucket!
Matthew Magnus, Art & Design Lecturer said, “We left Harwes Farm tired but content, with the quiet sense that we’d been part of something that mattered—even just for a day. We had an absolutely wonderful time and hope to get groups up to the farm more regularly!”
