Would you like to communicate in British Sign Language and be part of a more inclusive society? Learn the foundations of BSL and build your confidence in everyday communication.

This Sign Language course provides an introduction to the skills needed to communicate with BSL users in simple, everyday conversations. It is ideal for beginners who wish to develop awareness and understanding of deaf communication and inclusive practices.

Throughout the course, you will learn how to express basic information using signs, supported by facial expressions and body language, which are essential elements of BSL. You will develop confidence in using both manual signs and visual communication to convey meaning effectively.

Assessment takes place throughout the course, including practical tasks and some video-recorded assessments to demonstrate your progress.

By the end of the course, you will be able to engage in simple signed conversations and have developed an awareness of communication within the Deaf community.

What you’ll cover:

  • Introduction to British Sign Language
  • Basic signs for everyday communication
  • Fingerspelling and vocabulary development
  • Using facial expressions and body language
  • Participating in simple conversations
  • Understanding Deaf awareness and inclusive communication

 

You will be expected to complete work outside of class to support your learning, and commitment to attending all sessions is required.

Some assessments may be recorded on video as part of the qualification requirements.

There are no formal entry requirements, just a willingness to learn a new skill.

You will complete an initial assessment to ensure the course is suitable for you.
