Completed ESOL but not quite ready for Functional Skills? This course helps bridge the gap and build confidence for your next step.

This course is designed to support learners who have English as an additional language and are preparing to progress onto Functional Skills English. It provides a practical and supportive learning environment to help you develop confidence in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

You will work on real-life topics and activities linked to everyday situations and workplace contexts, helping you apply your English skills in meaningful ways. Learning is flexible and paced to suit your individual needs, with regular opportunities to practise and improve.

The qualification acts as a stepping stone towards Functional Skills English and supports progression into further study, training or employment.

  • Developing reading skills for everyday and workplace contexts
  • Writing clearly for practical purposes
  • Improving speaking and listening skills
  • Building confidence through real-life topics and activities
  • Developing transferable communication skills
  • Preparing for progression to Functional Skills English

This course requires commitment for the full duration of the programme. You will be expected to complete homework and independent study tasks outside of classroom sessions to support your learning and progression.

Supervised assessment is required to achieve the qualification.

Entry Requirements

Before starting the course, you will complete an initial assessment in English. This helps determine your current level in reading, writing, speaking and listening and ensures the course is right for you.
