Published 25 April

Motor Vehicle Service Engineering Apprentice Lewis Hooper is combining his hobby and his apprenticeship to really hone his skills!

Lewis Hooper

A third-year apprentice, Lewis currently combines studying one day a week at Craven College and working at Denton Cars and still finds time to compete in rallying competitions. Competing throughout England, Scotland, and Wales, Lewis can travel up to 300 miles to race, the closest venue to home being Dalby Forest. Working with a navigator, driver Lewis uses all his skills to regularly place in the top rankings. In the recent BTRDA Rally, Lewis and his team gained his best results to date, 1st in R2, 1st in Front Wheel Drive, 2nd Silver Star, and 5th in Two Wheel Drive.

Lewis got involved with rallying at a young age through his dad and began competing on the junior circuit at 14. Now competing in the senior rallying competitions, he hopes to take his rallying as far as possible!

Lewis is currently looking to take his journey further by obtaining sponsorship for his rallying. An expensive pursuit with all the necessary kit for top level driving, entry fees alone can cost £900 and with a new set of tyres required for each rally, costs can easily add up!

Speaking about his time at Craven College, Lewis said “Craven College has been really good. It was the next step in life, a bit different from just the basic maths and English and you’re working in real-life. It’s very different from school and has been much better for me.

Lewis hopes to complete his apprenticeship soon and once qualified will continue to work with cars whilst progressing with his rallying.

Adam Milner, Lecturer in Motor Vehicle Engineering said, “Lewis brings a wealth of expertise to the Motor Vehicle Department at Craven College, drawing from his extensive racing experience. His passion for all things automotive is clearly reflected in his committed work ethic.”

We’re really excited to keep following Lewis’s progress!
