Our newest students were welcomed to campus with our annual Freshers Fair this week, where they could meet their contemporaries, tutors and students from other years alongside invited guests to the College.
Our Freshers enjoyed a range of stalls and guests including a raffle, spin to win, representatives from the College LGBTQ+ Society, the Students’ Union, Skipton Rotary Club, Graffiti Workshop, Yorkshire and Humber Regional Cyber Crime Unit, The Samaritans, Inspire North, Living Well, The Talkabout Trust, and North Yorkshire Police.
Whilst students enjoyed a range of treats including the popular ice-cream van, they also had the opportunity to speak to a number of our visitors about support and careers.
Constable Akram from North Yorkshire Police said, “this is the time of their life when students are starting to think about what they want to do, so it’s really important that we’re here to give them an insight into potential careers and options.”
Sergeant Nathan Clarke representing Yorkshire and Humber Regional Cyber Crime Unit said “We’re here to encourage students to sign up for our annual Cyber Switch Up Competition whilst also taking about cybercrime. This competition is open to students in Yorkshire and the Humber in Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 and tests their digital skills through a series of questions. The highest scoring students will be invited to take part in a live final on 26 November at Sheffield Hallam University”.
For those students who still wish to enter the Cyber Switch Up Competition, entries are still being taken, with the online qualifier running from 01 to 20 October at www.cyberswitchup.net
Rosemary Simpson, Student Services Manager commented, “The event is open to everybody, both staff and students, and our aim is to create awareness of the support people can access both internally and externally. It’s also really important for us to get involved with community organisations and create working relationships”.
