Animal Studies
You will be designing different enrichment activities for a range of species in different scenarios. This will give you a foundational understanding of animal husbandry requirements & techniques used to improve animal welfare

Art & Design (Fashion, 3D Design, Graphic Design, Photography and Fine Art)
You will have the chance to learn the basic fundamentals of photography: including shutter speed, ISO, and aperture. As a group you will discuss what you think makes a good photograph, whilst considering key techniques such as rule of thirds, leading lines, framing and perspective, symmetry, and patterns. Using a series of prompts to generate a starting point for photographs, you will explore seeing your surroundings from a different perspective.

Aviation (Morning and afternoon sessions)
“In the air” you’ll learn about the roles and chain of command on board an aircraft, have the opportunity to participate in the safety demo using our mock cabin and equipment. On the ground, you will again learn about roles and responsibilities and take part in a demonstration of marshalling an aircraft to stand using marshalling wands.

Beauty Therapy
You will create a set of nails including nail art learning how to create a design using a dotting tool. You will then unleash all your creative flair by deciding on your own colour scheme and design.

Bricklaying
You will start the morning learning some basic bricklaying skills including rolling mortar, spreading a mortar bed, laying a few bricks to level and plumb. Using pointing and jointing methods, students will point a mock section of a brick wall and use a variety of finishes, using different types of pointing and jointing tools to produce a quality finish.

Carpentry & Joinery
A stable joint is one of the most fundamental aspects of woodworking, and this session will give you the opportunity to learn how to cut, form and fix an efficient and stable joint. Hearing from industry expert, you will hear about and utilise up-to-date techniques and practices.

Using our industry-standard kitchen, you will have the chance to sample a busy working environment making choux pastry and crème diplomat. You will learn techniques including making a complex paste, piping and filling and finishing with chocolate ganache creating delicious, finished products to take home with you.

Countryside & Agriculture
Your morning will be full of learning practical skills to help fuel your interest in our countryside. From woodland surveying to species identification to pond-dipping, this active session in the great outdoors gives you the fundamental skills to start your journey in the sector. The session will end with a more hands-on work, with learning how to carry out pre-start checks on tractors and machinery.

You will look at the need for branding and how this is done in esports. This will further be developed by looking at how organisations and games publishers use this branding to market and sell their products or business.

Hairdressing
Working in our specialist salon, you will get the chance to learn how to use the back wash with professional products and methods. The morning continues with learning conditioning treatment application and a bouncy blow dry to finish including how to efficiently use brushes and straighteners. Throughout the session the focus will be on the importance of products and professionalism in the salon environment.

Health & Social Care
You will complete a range of activities from first aid, manual handling, social skills, critical thinking, and dealing with discrimination – really challenging you to think outside the box. Horse Management (Sorry now full)
The morning will start with a tour of our state-of-the-art facilities, before being introduced to staff and the all-important horses! You will take part in a fun treasure hunt – can you find the biggest horse on the yard?! You will then have chance to groom some of our wonderful horses before learning some basic first aid and bandaging horses’ legs.

Media
Working in groups to create your own short films, you will apply the concepts and techniques you will learn throughout your course. You will brainstorm ideas, write a script, plan the shots, handle a camera, direct the actors, and edit the final product. This morning will provide you with hands-on experience in all aspects of filmmaking.

Media Make-up
The session will start with an introduction to Media Make-up, including the potential career paths you could follow. You will then have the chance to experience some hands-on activities using a bruise wheel to create a realistic bruise and experiencing a fact paint tutorial.

Mechanics – Motor Vehicle
You will assess your knowledge of motor vehicles with a “through the door” vehicle make quiz. The group will then split into two groups, one will follow resources to identify components of a vehicle on a lift, whilst the other group will learn the vital skill of jacking a vehicle safely.

Your morning will be spent in Craven College’s extensive and well-equipped agricultural engineering workshop. You will have the opportunity to view a range of industry-specific equipment and participate in practical activities including disassembling and reassembling vital mechanical components.

Painting & Decorating
Using all your creative inspiration, you will choose a plaster cast model and then paint it using a variety of colours, techniques, and paint brushes. You will enjoy an introduction to our facilities, and the basics of painting and decorating to produce top-level finishes.

Plastering
The first step of any successful build process is mixing plaster, and you will start your session by learning the best methods of mixing plaster. You will then try applying the plaster mixes to a wall and have a go at casting a mould.

Performing Arts
You will start the session with a vital theatre skill, how to warm up correctly! You will then hear about working towards being a professional performer, hearing from the expert tutor on their experiences as an actor/director and in drama school. The session will continue with games, improvisation, simple script work, and performances to peers. Ending with a Q&A session about the course and the wider industry, this session will be the perfect introduction to the Performing Arts at Craven College.

You will have the chance to experience a crime scene investigation using the necessary techniques to discover vital information. You will spend a fascinating morning focusing on forensic collection and analysis methods e.g. Presumptive Tests for blood, blood spatter analysis, fingerprint collection and analysis learning how to use these methods for data collection and how to successfully record your findings to identify common features.

Sport
You will explore a range of engaging topics designed to give a real feel for the world of sports and fitness. The morning will start with the application of fitness tests using various pieces of testing equipment to enhance understanding of how these are used before and after exercise to assess performance and track progress. Practical activities will also play a big role, as we’ll have opportunities to engage in sports and fitness exercises both inside, using our gym equipment, and outside, taking advantage of the local park. Additionally, we’ll dive into current issues in sport, covering thought-provoking topics such as media influence, equal pay across genders, and the impact of illegal substances on athletes and sporting culture.

What time should I arrive for the event?
If you are attending a morning workshop, please arrive no earlier than 9:15am to the event, your workshop will start at 9:30am.
If you have registered for the afternoon time slot of the Aviation or Catering workshops, please arrive no earlier than 1:15pm, your workshop will start at 1:30pm.
How many workshops can I choose for this event?
You can only register for ONE workshop for this event. There will be more opportunities to visit more curriculum areas at our other events throughout 2025. Visit www.craven-college.ac.uk/events for a full list of event dates.

Do I need to bring anything with me to the event?
We recommend that all students bring a bottle of water, snack, pen and notepad.
When you register for a workshop, any other information you need to know will be emailed to you within your confirmation email.
Can I bring someone with me to the event?
Unfortunately, only students who have registered for the event can come into the event. Parents/guardians will be able to drop and pick up at each Craven College campus.
Will there be refreshments provided at this event?
Unfortunately, our café won’t be open during this event. We recommend that all students bring a bottle of water and snack with them.
Do I need permission to come out of school for this event?
Yes, as this event is in school time, please get permission from your school to come to this event.
Do I need to wear school uniform?
No, you do not need to wear your school uniform. When you register for your workshop, a confirmation email will be sent to you with details of any specific clothing requirements for your chosen taster workshop.
If you are returning to school after the taster event, you will need to check with your school if you need to change back into your school uniform.
