As a Vehicle Maintenance Technician Apprentice, you will learn how to service and repair light vehicles such as cars and vans and work either in a dealership that focuses on a particular manufacturer or for an independent garage dealing with many different makes of vehicles. Your work will range from replacing simple parts to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment. Due to the constant introduction of ever more complex technologies and diagnostic techniques, you will need to demonstrate expertise in the technical side of your role and strong problem-solving skills, as well as a good grasp of the theoretical and practical aspects of a vehicle’s systems. Working independently or being an effective team member is also important whilst displaying good customer handling skills as these all help you to identify ways in which you can work more efficiently. Finally, you will gain an understanding of how your workshop and the dealership/ garage functions from a commercial perspective.
