LGBTQ+ History Month, observed in the UK in February, is an annual event intended as a means to raise awareness and combat prejudice against the LGBTQ+ community, whilst celebrating its achievement and diversity.

Craven College enjoyed a rich month filled with events to celebrate, organised by our LGBTQ+ Club in conjunction with the Student Union, with a number of departments throughout College sharing their skills and expertise to make this a true College-wide celebration.

Express Yourself in Colour

Hair & Beauty students offered braiding, hair mascara, hair spray colour, and glitter tattoos to help students show their pride in style!

Beauty students offered gel nail painting for students to display their colours, whilst Media Make-up students offered face-painting and make-up to help students show their love!

Chalk the Car Park with Pride

A month-long vibrant celebration, saw students transforming the campus car park into a masterpiece of love, pride, and inclusivity!

Scavenger Hunt

Students were challenged to find a number of hidden hearts throughout campus buildings!

200 Cupcakes

Students enjoyed celebrating our 200th anniversary by decorating 200 gorgeous cupcakes with splashes of colour!

The month culminated with a visit from Lilly Allenby, from the NHS who is a Community Outreach Worker from the Specialist Clinical Community Outreach Team. Lilly gave two talks to our students focusing on LGBTQ+ and sexual health.

Lilly Allenby said, “LGBT+ awareness is vitally important. LGBT+ young people are more likely to find themselves homeless than their non-LGBT+ peers comprising up to 24% of the youth homeless population. Over half of LGBTQ+ young people have faced some form of discrimination or harassment whilst accessing services.

“It’s important we understand terminology, explore the issues faced and be aware of ways we can improve LGBTQ+ provisions, all discussed in a safe, open space.”

Victoria Alderson Enrichment Officer added, “LGBTQ+ month has been thoroughly embraced and enjoyed by all Craven College students and staff. We have enjoyed inclusive activities which have been fun and informative and really shone a light about how important it is to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.
