Our Access to HE courses are designed to provide an alternative route of study to get back into education to prepare for university or professional training, supporting mature students with few formal qualifications but with life experience and helping to create pathways to life-changing opportunities

Students in Access to HE Health Professions classes have been experiencing the human body via VR headsets, giving them a new insight into their learning whilst remaining in the classroom! The VR headsets, bought in part with T Level funding, gave students the opportunity to try a practical way of learning to back up their theoretical studies.

Students were tasked with using the VR headsets, alongside the Human Anatomy VR for Meta Quest software, to explore and gather information on a series of structures within the respiratory system.

Working in pairs, one student used the headset to explore the respiratory system, whilst following instructions from their partner. Information was shared between the two, giving an interactive feel to the learning experience.

Access to HE student Joe said, “The lesson was really helpful. Using the VR headsets helped me to visualise the respiratory system a lot better, and it was really useful to be able to manipulate to look at exactly what we wanted.

Sophie added, “In the clinical setting you can literally see the human body in front of you. It’s very strange having the body at your fingertips, giving you the chance to dissect the system and peel away the layers. It was a fascinating experience. I’m a really visual learner, so once I got the hang of it, it really flowed.

Simon Reed, Access to HE Programme Lead added, “Normally a lesson of this nature would involve me instructing students on the respiratory system, followed by their own research. This time, however, they were able to experience the respiratory system for themselves. The Human Anatomy VR programme is an excellent resource for truly interactive learning.”
