Esports Students Deliver Tournament Experience

This week Esports students have run tournaments for local secondary schools. The aim of these events was to raise awareness of the Esports course at Craven College and for students to put into real world practice the skills they have learned during their studies.

Colne Park High School and Beckfoot School Bingley brought pupils to play in tournaments for Rocket League and Overwatch. The Craven College students ran the events fully, from managing the games and capturing social media content, to streaming the Rocket League games for Park High, and broadcasting the event of Overwatch for Beckfoot.

The students worked very well as a team and as part of the day they had to deal with technical issues such as player login problems and technical problems when broadcasting. The students managed these problems well, and they had little impact on the sessions as a whole.

The pupils and school staff that attended the events were very impressed with the time spent in College and appreciated the hard work the students put in to make the events a success. The pupils also gained information about the course and the opportunities that Esports as an industry sector can provide. This has led to several applications to the Esports course and bookings for upcoming taster days.

Chris Wright, Programme Lead and Lecturer in IT and Esports said, “As their Programme Lead, I am very pleased with how the students conducted themselves this week, showing a very mature attitude to running the events that included unexpected issues that were resolved swiftly and professionally. Getting the experience to run events like this for external visitors allows the students to use and showcase the skills they have developed in college, with me backing them up, but mostly leaving them to cover all aspects of the event management.”
