Access to HE (Health Professions) student Marnie Marshall has recently completed a nine-month course, the Women Unlocked Mentoring Programme.

Marnie Marshall

The Women Unlocked Mentoring Programme is an individual and group project for young women aged 16-24 living in North Yorkshire. Participants had the opportunity to work with a mentor on personal development topics such as CV writing, interview skills, confidence, and life planning. Programme members also worked as part of a group with other young women, coming together to tackle gender inequality. They had the opportunity to work with organisations such as the York & North Yorkshire Office for Policing, Fire, Crime and Commissioning, the North Yorkshire Police, the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and more to advise them how they can better protect and support our young women.

Marnie applied for the programme at the suggestion of Craven College Enrichment Officer Victoria Alderson. To apply she had to register interest and then compile a personal statement, from which Marnie was accepted onto the programme! She has been participating in the course once a month in York and said about the experience, “I’ve met some really nice people and got to work with some very valuable organisations, and I’ve learned some really good skills. And I got to go to York regularly which is a really nice place!

As part of the Programme, Marnie has been part of a group that has designed and produced a promotional video, aimed at tackling gender inequality and Marnie herself is the sole actor! She said, “I’m really proud of myself. I’ve always wanted to be able to star in a short video, so this programme has helped me achieve that dream!

Marnie has been a student at Craven College for a number of years, first studying Art & Design, and then returning this year to study Access to HE (Caring Professions). After her course, she plans to attend university in either Leeds or York to study Psychology and Philosophy. We asked Marnie why participating in this programme was so important to her, she said “It’s important because I am a woman. I’ve always found how some of society views women as lesser really weird, and I want to work towards equality”.

Victoria Alderson, Enrichment Officer added, “Marnie is a student who shines with kindness, stays motivated in every challenge, commits to inclusivity, offers friendship freely, and proves reliability through action, having been involved with our Student Union and community projects.  She not only learns for herself, but lifts the whole community.”

Congratulations on your success Marnie, we’re really proud of you!
