College Exhibition Reaches into the Community
At the culmination of our celebration of 200 years as an educational establishment at the heart of Skipton, we took our archives on tour into the local community!
Following exhibitions at Skipton Library and Craven Museum at the Town Hall we were delighted that two people very close to Craven College got in touch with some amazing donations for our archives!
Firstly, we were contacted by Stephanie Carter who of course wrote ‘Craven College: A History of Further Education in Skipton’ with Alexandra Weatherhead and later added ‘Craven College’s Library/Learning Resource Centre – a Short History’. This book formed a vital part of our research for our 200 years exhibition and gave a valuable insight into how College has developed and adapted over the years into the institution in its present form.
Stephanie brought a fabulous package into College containing various prospectuses and booklets ranging in date from the early 1900s right up to the end of the 1960s. These documents offer a fascinating glimpse into the courses offered in years gone by – some of which have not changed very much and will form a core part of our collection as we develop our archives.
Secondly former Lecturer Stephanie Athey saw our exhibition and got in touch to share her stories. Stephanie was course leader in our Early Years Department and played a fundamental role in shaping the way we deliver our courses at Craven College.
Stephanie visited us on campus and enjoyed a tour – especially enjoying a visit to our purpose-built Early Years facilities. As part of her visit Stephanie donated a fabulous scrapbook she had compiled from 1991 – 1998! Containing everything from photos at events, press articles, stories from students in her classes, and thank you cards the book is a wonderful living history of Early Years’ courses at Craven College almost 30 years ago! It was really exciting to be able to show Stephanie around campus and to hear how it had changed – and what things never change, like enthusiastic students and a commitment to great learning!
