Before Enrolment…

Once you know you have a conditional offer for a course at The Aviation Academy, you will need to apply for a Disclosure Scotland (£25) OR apply for a Basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) (£21.50).

Without a Disclosure or DBS (or application reference number), you will NOT be allowed to enrol on your chosen course, so it is imperative that you apply as soon as possible.

Please note that if you apply for a criminal record check and are not able to enrol on the course for other reasons (e.g. not achieving the required grades) The Aviation Academy will not be able to reimburse the cost of the Disclosure.

What is a Disclosure/DBS Record Check?

They are documents containing impartial and confidential criminal history information held by the police and government departments which can be used by employers or others to make safer recruitment decisions. Disclosure information could include:

  • Details of criminal records
  • Information about a person’s inclusion on children’s or adult’s lists
  • Other relevant information held by a local police force or Government Body
  • State that there is no information held

Please note: You will be asked to provide information about yourself (passport or your birth certificate) and provide evidence of residence (home address) i.e. utility bill, driving licence etc. It is important that you send the information requested or your application will be rejected. If you are under 18 years of age – you will need to send an accompanying letter that you are under 18 years old so cannot provide a utility bill. However, your school can provide this evidence if you prefer to send it with your Disclosure application.

Once you receive your Disclosure certificate please email a copy to customerservices@craven-college.ac.uk or bring it to enrolment.* If you require any further help with your application, you will find help sections on the official websites.

*Checks can take up to 2 weeks to arrive. You must have at least the application number to be able to enrol. Failure to obtain a clear check within a time period of your start date will mean removal from the course.

Work Experience & Ambassador Programme

All students will be expected to complete a minimum of 50 hours of unpaid work experience for each course or programme within an area which supports their study per academic year. This will be subject to the employer’s appropriate health and safety and insurance coverage.

Before you start College

Stage 1 – Contact businesses to request a work experience opportunity. This is better face-to-face as businesses will get lots of requests each year from a variety of students. You want to stand out!

Stage 2 – Check the employer is prepared to give Craven College a copy of their Employee’s liability insurance. We want you to be safe in the workplace so if the business cannot provide this then you cannot complete your hours with them. Politely thank the business for offering a work placement but move back to stage 1, the only exception to this is if you are already in paid work with an employer.

Once at College

Stage 3 – Complete the business contact details form. Hand this to your Student Development Officer in your timetabled tutorial slot or in at the Student Advice Hub on one of your timetabled days

Stage 4 – Wait for confirmation from the work experience team as hours completed before this may not count. Complete the self-assessment of skills and record hours on Grofar

Stage 5 – Enjoy your placement. Ask questions. Learn new skills. Build up your experience for your CV and remember to do the end of placement assessment of skills when the placement has ended

Leeds Bradford Airport Ambassador programme

For the Ambassador programme at Leeds Bradford Airport, you will be interviewed in January to start as the flights increase so please do not rely on this as a placement option. This would be over and above a placement!
