An entirely new course that “has been designed to provide learners with the breadth of horticultural knowledge and skills required to carry out routine tasks proficiently in a variety of contexts. It supports progression to employment within areas of the horticultural industries (such as professional gardening, landscaping, plant production and garden retail), as well as supporting learning in entry level roles in the early stages of a horticultural career. It is also designed to meet the needs of the amateur gardener.”

This Certificate is divided into eight topics:

  • Plant Identification – provides the skills and knowledge to enable learners to identify a wide range of plants
  • Plant Establishment – provides learners with the skills involved in the establishment of plants in containers and the open ground
  • Plant Propagation – provides learners with the skills and underpinning knowledge to propagate plants professionally
  • Plant Health – provides the skills to be able to identify and prevent a range of threats to plant health
  • Plant Care – equips learners with the skills and knowledge to be able to implement garden maintenance plans
  • Plant Pruning – equips learners with the horticultural skills and knowledge to be able to prune a range of plants
  • Garden Features – provides learners with the skills and underpinning knowledge to be able care for and maintain a wide range of garden features
  • Grassed Areas – provides learners with the skills required to establish and maintain grassed areas in private and public garden settings

You will be required to undertake two end point assessments (EPAs) to test their practical skills and knowledge. These will take place on the same day as the course, one in February/March and one in May/June.

Entry Requirements

No entry requirements but enthusiasm for horticulture is essential


  • Lessons will be available on Teams and so access to a computer is essential
  • Safety boots, gloves and appropriate work wear is required for practical sessions
  • Students may wish to use their own hand tools

Further Study

  • RHS – Principles of Plant Growth and Development Level 2 Certificate can be studied alongside. Successful completion of RHS Level 2 courses may lead to progression onto RHS Level 3 courses.
  • A wide variety of career options in horticulture are achievable with RHS qualifications.


Craven College students completing RHS courses have gone on to work for the RHS (Harlow Carr), National Trust, English Heritage, and Perennial (York Gate). Others have established their own businesses in garden maintenance or garden design.
