Public Services students yesterday visited HMP Wetherby Young Offenders Institute (WYOI).
The group were given the chance to meet with prison officers, members of the youth offending team as well as police prison liaison officers. They learned about the admittance procedure which inmates (trainees) follow, the crimes they have committed and the prison sentences they have to face as a consequence.
Students were also given an insight into Keppel Wing, a specialised wing for extremely vulnerable prisoners, which is the only one of it's kind in the UK. There were further talks on gang violence, drugs in prisons and the problems which inmates and staff face. Finally, they learned about the career opportunities that are available within the sector.
Bridget Slater, Public Services tutor, believed the day provided a great insight for the students. She said "The trip was a real eye-opener. The opportunity to meet such a wide variety of workers was a fantastic inspiration for the students and the information they received was extremely valuable".
