Due to the introduction of T-levels, the importance of developing employability and the requirement for our students to complete work placements, Business Tutors have been working closely with employers from the local area to create a ‘Meet the Mentor’ event to match local employers with young people studying Business at College. Some employers include Skipton & Craven Action For Disability (SCAD), Skipton BID, Skipton Town Council, Out of the ORDinary, and Crossgates Bioenergetics.
Technical (T) Level qualifications are being introduced by the Government from 2020. They will become another choice for students after GCSE alongside A Levels and Apprenticeships and will include a mixture of classroom-based learning and 315 hours/45 days of industry placement to get students ready for the ‘world of work’.
During induction week, Business students were given the task to produce a CV, practice interview skills, how to dress and behave in a real-life situation. Each student had 4 minutes with each employer then had to move on – the idea was to impress the employer and secure a role they were interested in.
A Business student said: “I thought it was very challenging and it really pushed me out of my comfort zone, however, I felt really proud of myself after the event. It was very useful as it was ‘real’ with employers and not tutors.”
Business Tutor, Jill Frik said: “We hope to develop this further and maintain a working group with our employers to ensure students have links to the real business world during their course at Craven College.”
