Construction Tutor Judges Talent at National Competition

Published 19 April

A Construction tutor has been judging the talent at the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices.

The competition, named SkillBuild, sees the very best compete against each other to be crowned a winner in their chosen trade. Much like the Olympics, as each level of competition progresses, competitors will be tested not only on their technical abilities, but on their time management, character and commitment, and the competitions can help them build their own confidence, self-esteem and life skills.

Construction tutor Steve Syers was alerted to the opportunity by Craven College sponsor British Gypsum. He was asked to apply to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) to become a judge and within weeks was judging at Leicester and York. Steve then went on to judge the national final at the NEC in Birmingham which lasted over three days and was attended by over 70,000 people.

Steve said: “It’s a great competition and I had a fantastic time judging. The talent on show was incredible and you could really tell the amount of time and effort the competitors had put into practicing for the event.”
